Loans

MUMASK aims to promote cultural and scientific cooperation between institutions and to showcase its collections to the widest possible audience, whether local, national or international. It therefore has a loan policy for temporary exhibitions.

terms

Any cultural institution with adequate facilities to host a temporary exhibition (minimum 4 months and maximum 10 months) and able to guarantee appropriate security and conservation conditions may apply for a loan.

Except in exceptional cases, MUMASK agrees to lend a maximum of 20 items per loan and a maximum of 5 complete costumes per application.

Before submitting a request, please consult the general loan conditions.
General loan conditions
Loan requests cannot concern items held at MUMASK that are classified as ‘Treasures of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation’ or belong to the collections of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and are on deposit at MUMASK. If the loan request concerns one of these works, it must be submitted directly to the Services of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in accordance with the procedure established by the latter.

How to apply for a loan?

All loan requests must be submitted at least six months before the exhibition opens, and no earlier than 12 months before the opening date.

Requests submitted after the deadline will not be considered. All loan requests must be submitted using the following form.

The loan application form must be sent to the Collections Management, Preventive Conservation and Restoration Department by email to prets@mumask.be.

The following documents must be enclosed with the loan application form:
Facility Report: a technical sheet detailing the conditions under which the objects are to be exhibited.
Project synopsis: a brief description of the nature and purpose of the exhibition.
Terms and conditions: a signed copy of the terms and conditions of loan.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Review of loan applications

The loan committee meets regularly to assess loan applications received. A positive or negative response is given to the applicant institution within two months of receipt of the application.

If the application is approved, an agreement in principle validating the loan commitment, but not its content, is sent to the requesting institution by electronic means. The list of items is then reviewed by MUMASK with the borrower, adapted if necessary, and attached to the loan agreement.

Any changes to the loan request after the contract has been signed (removal or addition of items from the list, change of dates or place of exhibition, etc.) must be sent to MUMASK at least three months before the start of the exhibition and no later than one month before the date initially scheduled for the extension.

News and important information

Our teams are small and our loan schedules are already full for the coming months. As a result, loan requests for exhibitions taking place before June 2026 will no longer be accepted, and loan requests submitted for exhibitions taking place between June 2026 and the end of 2026 may not exceed 10 items from the collection and may not include costumes.

Institutions with which a partnership or collaboration agreement has been concluded, as well as Belgian museums recognised by a government (region, province, municipality), may be exempt from certain fees (see full terms and conditions).

We are actively working on putting our collections online so that institutions can submit more precise loan requests, among other things. This should be completed in the course of 2027.

Any requests for further information about MUMASK's loan conditions should be sent by email to prets@mumask.be
