Wheather the mask incarnates spiritual entities or communicates with them, it is always part of a whole, of a costume transforming the body.
Through its exhibition “INTERLACED”, the international Carnival and Mask Museum proposes a new exploratory approach to rites and customs by putting a spotlight on another object which is just as remarkable: textile.
Wheather it plays a key role or serves as a backdrop, fabric is omnipresent in the ritual sphere.
The exhibition, which shows about a hundred pieces selected for their ethnographic richness, deals with the numerous ways textiles exist and operate within ritual practices all around the world.
The exhibition trail consists of six chapters exploring the different ways in which textiles operate. The first three examine actions concerni ng the person wearing the textile in order to transform, protect or show herself of himself. The last three chapters deal with the manners in which textiles can act in other spheres of social life such as representing the world, tying the knot of marriage or honoring the dead.
